Oct 12, 2005 - The Reverend Jennifer Linman conducts monthly Bible and Brewskis meetings at a Manhattan bar, allowing participants to read Bible verses and follow with discussions over pints of beer.

Linman, an associate minister at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, on the Upper East Side, began conducting the once-a-month scripture study as David Copperfield's Pub about 18 months ago.

"This is the first time I've ever attended," Jennifer Clarke said at a recent meeting. She learned about Bible and Brewskis from the church bulletin. "I'm not a member [of Epiphany], but I was curious about something like this. I like to try new things."
Linman began the pub meetings after she arrived from her first pastoral assignment in Agoura Hills, Calif., where she convened regular fellowship get-togethers in a bar there. She's never heard anybody criticize the meetings.

"In fact," she said, "if I had a nickel for every time somebody said, 'This is terrific,' I'd be a very rich woman."

Years ago, Linman said, another priest at Epiphany conducted Bible studies at David Copperfield's, which is located directly across the street from the church. But, when he left, the meetings were abandoned. Linman not only resumed them, she kept their format. People take turns reading one verse at a time and then discuss the reading.
Everybody pays his or her own bill, but Linman supplies extra Bibles because most people arrive without one.
