Bible Verse of the Day
Psalm 18:1-2
“For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. He sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Brought to you by BibleGateway.com. Music is central to worship at The Church of the Epiphany. The beautiful Norman architecture of the nave provides excellent acoustics for all voices – both the volunteer and professional singers who are members of our Epiphany Choir, and the young singers in our Children's and Cherub choirs. Do you enjoy singing? Volunteer singers are welcome in the Epiphany Choir. This adult choir is a very dedicated and loyal group, in part because rehearsal is grounded not only in solid musical practice, but also in historical, spiritual and liturgical awareness. Led by a director with a broad background that includes seminary study and advanced degrees in performance and literature, the Epiphany Choir is a great place for you to expand your music skills and increase your understanding of the role of music in the liturgy. Weekly rehearsals are held Thursdays at 6:45-8:15pm from mid-September through mid-June. Sunday warm-up rehearsal is at 10:00am before the 11:00am service. The repertoire is diverse in style and level of difficulty, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, J. S. Bach, Gospel music and spirituals, and music by living composers. Thursday Rehearsal • 6:45-8:15pm The 2011-2012 section leaders are Sara Stevens, soprano; Daniel Gundlach, countertenor; Mark Sanderlin, tenor; and Alex Bonnin, bass. Epiphany's 50-rank, 3-manual Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ, opus 1412, dates from 1963 and is housed in the chancel tower. It retains the Pedal Bourdon and the Positiv Dulciana and Unda Maris stops from the 3-manual 1916 Steere organ that preceded it. Built under the tonal supervision of Joseph Whiteford in dialogue with John Cartwright (Organist and Choirmaster from 1958 to 1987), the Epiphany organ is a masterpiece of historic significance. Elegantly and clearly voiced, it works very well for music of widely different styles. For photos, stoplist, and other details about the instrument, go to the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists website by clicking here. In the sanctuary, we have a Mason & Hamlin model AA grand piano, which was restored under the supervision of Tali Mahanoor. It is a beautiful instrument, particularly for interpretation of Romantic repertoire. |
