Epiphany’s Wednesday Night Dinner - Thanksgiving
Well, it seems many organizations passed around the Thanksgiving Meals lists to many groups this year. There were 40 people on line when we started at 6 pm. It was a good thing we had cooked all the turkey breasts (eight 10 pounders). We got 40 slices per breast so decided each person could have two slices, and if we got 100 guests, we would use 5 of the birds and could freeze the other three for future use.
Much to our surprise, the guests kept coming. We made an additional pan of mashed potatoes. Fortunately we had made some salads for the vegetarians. When the veggies ran out, we substituted the salads. I had gotten eight large pumpkin pies from Costco, which I figured would yield 96 pieces. I had bought two huge apple pies there as well, for no particular reason. They came in very handy.
When the last guest left at 7:30, we had given out 140 meals!!! The last twenty or so were missing veggies or cranberry sauce but most got a full dinner. That’s as many guests as the St. George group would feed at our “normal” Thanksgiving Eve dinners.
Our volunteers were fantastic, especially David Loughran (who cooked most of the food), Sarath Sochannam, Alessandra Cabras and Marcy Kempner. Mother Elise and Deacon Horace watched over us all with an opening prayer and a calming presence. All in all, a very fulfilling Thanksgiving.
